Charcot Marie Tooth Physiotherapy Treatment

Charcot Marie Tooth Physiotherapy Treatment

Physiotherapy is one of the most important therapies for improving the symptoms of CMT and reduces secondary complications such as contractures (where a muscle shortens and is unable to work in its normal range)

Treatment can include:

  • Strengthening muscles to improve function such as muscles at the front of the lower leg (eg tibialis anterior) to help bring the toes up when your child walks, this could help reduce foot drop and prevent your child from tripping over their feet.
  • Exercise programme, your physiotherapists will make a personalised exercises programme for your child which will incorporate strengthening and aerobic exercise to improve your child's cardiovascular fitness as well as muscle strength.
  • Posture and balance exercises to improve proprioception (body awareness in space) and improve balance to prevent falls.
  • Stretching and range of movement exercises to prevent muscles getting short and turning into a contracture.
