Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) surgery is surgery to help correct spasticity in the lower limb mainly caused by Cerebral Palsy. The surgery involves cutting the nerve roots coming out of the spine responsible for spasticity. Spasticity causes muscles to be permanently switched on, making them really hard to move, meaning muscle function can be massively affected. Physiotherapy can help before and after this surgery. Physiotherapy is really important pre op to make the muscles in the upper limb stronger, and post op to make sure we strengthen the muscles in the lower limb making them strong and functional.
