Perthes Disease Perthes disease is a childhood disorder affecting the head of the femur and therefore the ball and socket joint of the hip in the pelvis. This is because of an inadequate blood supply to the femur. It can potentially lead to arthritis of the hip in later life. Over half of children will recover without any treatment. The severity of Perthes disease is dependent upon the shape of the femoral head.
