Progressive supra nuclear palsy (SPS)

Introduction to Progressive supra nuclear palsy (SPS)

Supranuclear palsy (SPS) is a neurological condition that affects the nerve cells in the brain and the symptoms get worse over time. This is due to the gradual deterioration of nerves in the brain. Many areas of the brain are affected which means that an individual with SPS can present with a large variety of symptoms. SPS affects men and women in equal numbers and the average age of diagnosis is 63 years old.

The symptoms of SPS are similar to those of Parkinson's disease. Individuals with SPS are likely to have problems with their walking, balance and are at risk of falls. They require management by a neurological physiotherapist in order to improve functional ability where possible, maintain current level of mobility and to reduce the rate of deterioration over time.
