Effects of Transverse Myelitis The effects of transverse myelitis can progress rapidly over minutes, or may progress over a number of weeks. The effects are dependent on the level of the spinal cord damage. Effects are generally seen below the level of the spinal cord damage and can present as a reduction or complete loss of: sensation voluntary movement proprioception (awareness of joint position in space) bladder and bowel function sexual function Individuals also commonly experience: reduced ability to breathe deeply and cough pain muscular spasms At the height of the disorder approximately 50% of patients have no voluntary movements in their legs, almost all patients have a degree of urinary incontinence, and over 80% of patients report altered sensation.
