What causes Flat Feet?

Flat feet means that the medial longitudinal arch (the inside part of your child's foot which is usually raised off the floor) has disappeared and flattened. In young children the arch isn't always present as the soft tissues in the foot such as ligaments aren't as strong or developed, and baby fat could also be present. The medial arch tends to develop when the child is aged 6 or 7, but some children might not fully develop an arch until they are 10 years old. If a medial arch doesn't develop this could be genetic, and your child may not develop an arch. Flat feet are only a problem if your child is experiencing symptoms.
