Conditions Treated with Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)

Conditions Treated with Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)

The physiotherapists at Manchester Neuro Physio will be able to assess whether FES is suitable for you. FES may be appropriate if you have one of the following conditions:

  • Stroke
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Head injury
  • Incomplete spinal cord injury
  • Hereditary spastic paralysis
  • Other upper motor neurone neurological condition
  • Orthopaedic condition (muscle inactivity due to non-use)

The above conditions all affect the upper motor neurones.

Conditions affecting the lower motor neurones cannot be treated with FES. These include:

  • Peripheral nerve injuries (those outside of the spinal cord)
  • Polio
  • Motor neurone disease
  • Guillian-Barre Syndrome

FES cannot be used to treat these conditions but this does not mean that our other neurological physiotherapy cannot be of benefit to you.
