Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease

Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease

There is no specific diagnostic test for Alzheimer's disease. Diagnosis is usually made based on the patient's or relative's history and by excluding other causes for the symptoms such as infection, vitamin deficiency, thyroid problems, brain tumours or side effects of medication. Blood tests and brain scans may be used to confirm diagnosis. Diagnosis can be made by your GP or a specialist geriatrician or neurologist. Early diagnosis should be made to help the person benefit from support and drug treatments that are now available which may help stabilise the symptoms for a while.
