Functional Electrical Stimulation Functional electrical stimulation (FES) delivers an electrical stimulation in order to initiate a muscle contraction, and is done so using a machine. The machine works by having electrodes placed on the skin which then stimulate the nerves which supply the muscles. The muscles therefore cause a contraction. The device is small and portable, meaning it is suitable for everyday use and can be easily carried by your child. FES can be used for both upper and lower limb function. One of the common conditions treated using FES in children is 'foot drop'.
