Introduction to Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy

Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) is a specialist surgical procedure performed on children with Cerebral Palsy. It involves opening up the bones of the spine in the lower back to operate on the nerves underneath, which could potentially help relieve spasticity.

After the operation and a period of rehabilitation, many children are able to stand or walk unaided for the first time. For those that can already walk a remarkable improvement in their gait and fatigue levels is seen. Most also see a dramatic change in their posture, overall comfort and quality of life.

SDR is currently being funded on the NHS but the child must meet strict criteria and have access to long term Physiotherapy treatment, before surgery will be agreed.
