Effects of Juvenile Arthritis

Juvenile arthritis is diagnosed by ultrasound or MRI initially to rule out any other conditions however if symptoms began before the age of 16 and have occurred for up to six weeks or more and there are no other underlying conditions present, it is likely to be Juvenile arthritis. Upon diagnosis your GP will prescribe relevant medication which may include painkillers such as paracetamol, or Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to help reduce pain and stiffness. Steroids, eye drops and vaccinations may also be prescribed by your doctor.

Symptoms of Juvenile Arthritis include pain, joint swelling and redness; it may also affect the eyes, skin, muscles or gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms can vary from day to day and flare ups may occur from infections or periods of stress or lack of sleep. In up to 20% of patients it can cause an inflammatory eye condition called uveitis which if left untreated can lead to potential sight loss, therefore it is important to be aware of this symptom.
