Effects of Alzheimer's Disease

In the early stages of the condition people may experience mild lapses in their memory or difficulty finding the right words. This may not be noticed initially by the person and family and friends may be the first pick up on these problems.

As the condition progresses people symptoms become more obvious and impact significantly on a person's life. These may include:

  • Confusion
  • Difficulty remembering people, places or dates
  • Mood swings, frustration, irritability
  • Communication difficulties both orally and written
  • Difficulty with fine motor skills such as writing, dressing
  • Wandering
  • Emotionally labile
  • Difficulty with basic everyday tasks such as dressing, feeding
  • Reduced mobility, increased risk of falls
