Thermoplastic Splinting

What is Thermoplastic Splinting?

Thermoplastic splinting is a treatment technique used by Manchester Neuro Physio to position joints in order to aid recovery or prevent deterioration. Thermoplastic Splints are used to stretch tight muscles in the arm/leg to increase range of movement or prevent them getting tighter. The splinting materials are warmed slightly to soften them and enable moulding to the individual's joint shape. The individual is shown how to apply the splint and how often, this is known as a splinting regime. After an initial build up period, a 'day' splint can be worn 6-8 hours at a time, a 'resting' splint can be worn throughout the night. Straps can be added to the splint to enable the individual or carer to take it on and off easily. It is essential that the patient adheres to the splinting regime and it is monitored and progressed accordingly by a physiotherapist. The patient will be a taught a stretching and strengthening exercise program to continue at home alongside the regular application of the splint.
