Physiotherapy treatment for Perthes disease

Physiotherapy treatment for Perthes disease

Perthes' disease can be diagnosed through an x-ray which will show a clear diagnosis of the hip joint.

Physiotherapy management can help a child with Perthes' by prescribing an advanced range of motion exercises in addition to regular medical check-ups. Children are encouraged to continue normal exercises but should focus more on non-weight bearing sports such as swimming or cycling and specific strengthening of the muscles around the joint. Activities to be avoided are weight bearing activities such as running and jumping and sport. Treatment will depend on the severity of the condition and is likely to include the use of walking aids.
