Spina Bifida

Spina Bifida

Spina Bifida is a congenital (from birth) condition which causes a gap in the back bone (vertebrae) resulting in either just a small gap between the bones, a gap that is big enough just for the membranes that surround the spinal cord to push through, or a gap big enough for the membranes and spinal cord to push through causing severe damage to the spinal cord. This damage can result in mobility problems, bladder and bowl incontinence and an increase in fluid around the brain and spinal cord causing further damage. Physiotherapy can help with the symptoms such as muscle weakness by providing treatment which will help strengthen the weak muscles and improve your child's function.
