Neurocutaneous Syndrome Physiotherapy Treatment

Neurocutaneous Syndrome Physiotherapy Treatment

Physiotherapy can help with symptoms such as numbness, weakness and scoliosis. Treatments can include:

  • Strengthening exercises for any muscles that are weakened. This can include strengthening your child's leg muscles by doing sit to stand, or by playing with your child in different positions such as high kneeling to activate their leg and bum muscles. Our Physiotherapists make these exercises fun by adding throw and catch exercises and other activities that your child is interested in.
  • If your child is experiencing numbness or altered sensation, our physiotherapists could apply different textures to your child's skin, or get them to feel different objects to increase the information going into the brain.
  • If your child has altered tone, for example high tone (muscles are stiff and contracted) your physiotherapist will encourage your child to weight bear on that limb, either by standing or learning on their hand, this can help normalise tone. Our Physiotherapists might also passively stretch your child to help decrease tone. To increase tone by making your child use their muscles more, this might be needed if your child has floppy arms, legs and trunk.
  • If your child has a poor posture, for example scoliosis which is curvature of the spine, making it look S shaped, treatment could include strengthening muscles and providing advice on posture and positioning.
