Physiotherapy Treatment for SDR

Physiotherapy Treatment for SDR

Pre SDR

In order to be considered for NHS funding Children need to be assessed by a physiotherapist. At Manchester Neuro Physio we understand the suitability criteria and can help to assess your child's suitability for SDR surgery on the NHS. We can provide you with supporting evidence to help you in applying for the procedure.

Once accepted for the procedure an exercise programme should be started. This will involve strengthening the muscles that will be weak after the surgery and will help your child familiarise themselves with the post-operative physiotherapy programme.

Post SDR

Physiotherapy is an essential part of the SDR process, intensive rehabilitation after the surgery will maximize your child's abilities. Current NICE guidelines state that physiotherapy should be carried out at least three times a week for the first four months, gradually reducing to once a month at two years post-surgery.

Physiotherapy can be provided on land and in the hydrotherapy pool and will involve exercises and games aimed at:

  • Increasing muscle strength
  • Improved postural alignment
  • Developing isolated movements
  • Increased range of movement
  • Improving balance and walking
  • Increasing function and participation

Physiotherapy treatment can be provided at home, school and in our physiotherapy clinic. This enables us to have a better overview of your child's requirements throughout their day, and provide the most effective treatment. Our dedicated, specialised staff can maximise your child's potential by working closely with family, carers and teachers.

We can also provide orthotics and equipment tailored to your child's individual needs.
