Symptoms of Nemaline Myopathy

Symptoms of Nemaline Myopathy

The most classical symptoms for NM are muscle weakness and low tone or "hypotonia". Depending on the type of NM the symptoms and severity can vary. Common symptoms associated with NM are as follows:

  • Muscle weakness, most notable in the upper areas of the arms and legs, trunk muscles, face, neck and often respiratory muscles
  • Low tone or "hypotonia"
  • Difficulties breathing independently
  • Problems with speech and/or swallowing
  • Delayed development of independent mobility and walking when present in children
  • Curving of the spine ?scoliosis? which normally worsens as those affected go through puberty

Whatever the combination of symptoms, physiotherapy can help people affected with Nemaline Myopathy to retain as much function and mobility as possible. Manchester Neuro Physio has vast experience of treating patients with neurological conditions and can provide an individualised service for those requiring treatment.
