Physiotherapy for Huntington's Disease

Physiotherapy for Huntington's Disease

Physiotherapy for Huntington's disease is aimed at the helping individuals with symptoms such as:

  • Mobility problems
  • Balance problems
  • Musculoskeletal problems

These problems are treated using a combination of approaches.

Early intervention from the specialist physiotherapists at Manchester Physio can assist individuals with maintaining patterns of normal movement. This can allow people with Huntington's disease to retain their independence during activities of daily living such as getting out of bed, climbing the stairs and walking.

Exercises and activities are performed and home exercise programmes prescribed to maintain balance and, therefore, reduce the risk of falls.

Musculoskeletal problems can be treated with advice, exercises, manual therapy and electrotherapy techniques.

As Huntington's disease progresses individuals often experience speech and swallowing difficulties due to loss of muscular control or weakness of the muscles of the face and throat. Aspiration of food, drink or saliva can lead to recurrent chest infections and hospital admissions. The physiotherapists at Manchester Physio can advise you and your family / carers on breathing exercises, chest clearance techniques and positioning during eating and drinking, and positioning whilst in bed to minimise the risk of aspiration and treat chest infections.
