Effects of HSMN

HSMN will affect each individual differently according to which specific nerves are damaged. Symptoms generally appear gradually over a period of time and may include:

  • Muscle weakness
  • Muscle wasting making the limbs appear thinner
  • Altered sensation
  • Reduced balance, falls
  • Abnormalities in the foot including high arches and claw toes
  • Fatigue
  • Pain in the joints
  • Muscle cramps

Symptoms may worsen over time as the condition is degenerative causing the person to have increasing difficulty in day to day tasks. Physiotherapy can help to maintain your independence and function for as long as possible and support you throughout your condition as your needs change.
